Courses

The Chair of Construction Business and Project Management of the RWTH Aachen offers a variety of courses within the faculty of civil engineering. Currently, about 1000 students are enrolled in the degree programs civil engineering, environmental engineering, industrial engineering in the field of civil engineering, mobility and traffic, geography and waste management.

General Information

Regarding course contents and necessary examination performance the details of every course of study and the relevant examination and study regulations are binding and will be published by the RWTH Aachen in official announcement.

In case of contradiction the details of the CAMPUS System of RWTH Aachen are applicable by priority. Venues and duration of events as well as announcements of the Chair of Construction Business and Project Management can be looked into the CAMPUS System as well. Updates with regard to content including modifications are made continuously.

Bachelor of Science

Life Cycle of Building Projects

A totality of five chairs makes up the lecture and presents the whole life cycle of a construction project with the help of a concrete project from practice. The event aims to generate an understanding of interfaces between planning disciplines, construction-related boundary conditions and the requirements for the completion of construction projects. Main emphasis is also put on construction site management, excavating construction pits or the building construction with regard to construction physics. The Facility Management looks at the whole life cycle of the project from conception to demolition.
The lecture is held in German.

Construction Methods I

The lecture is divided into two sections: The first part focuses on earthwork and the construction of excavations. The second part of the lecture deals with the topic of process technology of concrete construction. In this context, characteristics of concrete and its processing, including different part processes will be explained. Both parts include exercise lessons.
The lecture is held in German.

Construction Contract Law

The lecture introduces civil building laws and refers topart B of the VOB in particular. It deals with general contract requirement for the execution of construction works. The following topics are given priority: legal relationship of the parties’ construction contract as well as their rights and duties after finalization of the building contract.
The lecture is held in German.

Dialogue with Practice

The lecture “Dialogue with practice” with a specialization in building operations and geotechnical engineering is a common and coordinated event of the chairs of building operations and project management, building operations and building technology and geotechnical engineering in building trade. The lectures’ aim is to acquaint students with recent projects from practice with the help of experts actively participating in building projects.
The lecture is held in German.

Institute Internship

The “institute internship” with a specialization in building operations and geotechnical engineering is a common and coordinated event of the chairs of building operations and project management, energy-efficient construction and geotechnical engineering in building trade. Aim of the internship is to enable students to carry out the lecture independently, questioning the execution of construction.
The lecture is held in German.

Project Management I

The lecture deals with the organization of project management for complex building projects including their practical implementation. After an introduction into the topic, project management will be looked at from the perspective of customers as well as contractors.
The lecture is held in German.

Construction Economics

First, economic aspects of building operations will be introduced. Besides the characteristics of constructions, special conditions of construction industry and organizational structures of construction companies will be dealt with. Moreover, accounting of construction companies forms a fundamental aspect of the lecture and will be dealt with under different aspects.
The lecture is held in German.

Master of Science

Construction Methods Master

Different technologies of excavation enclosure form one of the main themes of the lecture. Different types of construction for inner-city excavation and underground procedures for new constructions and reconstruction of sewer will be presented in the lecture. Environmentally friendly construction methods increasingly gain importance. For this reason, they will be portrayed with the help of micro-tunneling and shield drive.
The lecture is held in German.

Project Management Master

The lecture focuses on selected topics with respect to customer- and order acquisition with the help of methods to manage the acquisition processes. Subjects such as risk management and liquidity management, logistics, interface management as well as a “clean” project completion form relevant themes as well.
The lecture is held in German.

Construction Contract Management

The lecture is based on the lecture Construction Contract Law and mainly concentrates on the analysis and solution of legal issues in private construction laws. Specific legal problems as well as interfaces between construction and rights in major projects will be dealt with. The multistage procedure of “legal project management” will be analyzed with the help of a variety of practical examples and concrete construction contracts.
The lecture is held in German.

Strategy, Organization, Processes

Main topics of the lecture are considered strategic development options and forms of organization for construction companies. Innovative types of companies and systems for a strategic development of a business segment are presented.
The lecture is held in German.

Human Resource Management

Human resource development is considered the centre of the lecture. It includes the development of one’s own personality and the interaction of people. Moreover, personnel selection procedures and conflict resolution strategies will be one of the presented topics over the course of the semester.
The lecture is held in German.

Project Development of Property

Firstly, tasks, phases, cycles and key terms of development of property will be presented. In a second step, emphasis is put on “Corporate Real Estate Management” and “Due Dilligence”. Additionally, topics such as market sectors, performance of properties and project financing will be dealt with.
The lecture is held in German.

Interdisciplinary Factory Planning

The lectures’ aim is to develop a multidisciplinary factory concept. After the introduction of theoretical principles at the beginning of the lecture, mixed teams will develop a concept. The assessment is made up of two components and includes a written composition and a presentation of the concept developed.
The lecture is held in German.

Turnkey Construction

The lecture provides knowledge in the areas of interior construction including different options for facades and construction in existing context. Besides general information of relevant disciplines and typical quality risks, weak points and defects, sensible cost key figures and realistic values of time required in the field of turnkey construction will be presented in the course of the lecture.
The lecture is held in German.

Building Abroad

The lecture presents characteristics to be considered for a lasting strategic orientation of construction companies on foreign markets as well as for the successful handling of construction projects. Thereby, economical and technical opportunities and risks and characteristics in project management are one of the topics to be discussed. Moreover, possible opportunities and errors in international construction projects are demonstrated.
